Rohan Nicols is an Australian designer with a fetish for metal smithing and jewellery. He appreciates interesting and new materials with which he designs original and unique objects. Rohan admires modern styles of design and industrial design. He incorporates smooth and refined details within his works and takes advantage of new and modern techniques.
The direction I would like to take is one that incorporates Rohan Nicol’s identity and personality as well as his process as a designer. I would like to be able to convey in his logo his love of design, particularly industrial design.
On his behalf I would like to take advantage of clean lines, simple shapes and an image/logo that represents Rohan as a crisp, new and cutting edge designer. The logo will also hopefully reflect his style and his creative process. It will convey his attraction to modernist styling’s along with his admiration of modern materials.
In order to capture his markets attention Rohan will need a variety of elements to his logo. Firtsly, we consider the title/name of the company. He originally considered the use of “UBLO” as his company name, but has expressed he would prefer his name to be apart of the logo. I believe this is a good step as his name is very important in terms of the company he has built up. As his name really is a bold statement about what he delivers to the market, as it is his work, his design and his creation…essentially it is him.
The use of his name will deliver a strong message to his market making him seem confident about his work and appear more prestigious. And combining this with a secondary graphic will be very impressive. The marriage of the image and the name is important as image can eventually overtake the name and be an easy and cost effective way to market his product line.
However the company and the logo must not take over the products of course but complement them. To do this we must consider the reduction of decoration in the entire logo, including the name. The use of minimalist design will thus enforce Rohan’s company and presence within the market and furthermore complement his work (being modern).
The logo must be simple and easy to scale in order to be placed on a range of things such as letterheads, business cards, websites, stamped upon Rohan’s work to identify it, brochure, large enough to be placed onto a booth/stall at a market and later for stationary.
In terms of the designing of the logo the following have been considered:
• Bold
• Sharp
• Rough – to appear like design concepts
• the contrast of the initial concept and the final product
• modern
• industrial designs
• And geometric
